Fluoroscopy is commonly used in studies of the gastrointestinal tract. A fluoroscope is a special x-ray machine that projects images onto a monitor and records them in a video format. Patients may be asked to drink a contrast material that appears white on the monitor, thus allowing physicians to study the function of the gastrointestinal tract as the contrast travels through the digestive system.
